ALLO Communications has introduced the Smart Schools program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to enhance digital access among students in Lincoln, Nebraska. This program is built upon the Calix SmartTown® for Education platform, which aims to provide students with secure and reliable Wi-Fi access. The initiative specifically targets students in grades 6-12 within the Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) system, allowing them to connect to over 43,000 Wi-Fi access points throughout the community. By doing so, ALLO is addressing the persistent “homework gap” that many students face, thereby fostering digital equity and extending educational opportunities beyond traditional classroom settings.
Bridging the Digital Divide
The Smart Schools initiative leverages the advanced capabilities of the Calix Broadband Platform. According to reports, the program is designed to ensure that all participating students can engage in online learning from various locations, such as their homes, libraries, parks, and other community spaces. This move not only aims to provide high-performance connectivity but also ensures that students have access to secure and authenticated online experiences. With the integration of the Wi-Fi Alliance Passpoint® architecture, ALLO is set to deliver a safer digital environment for students, which includes protective measures against online threats.
To celebrate the launch of Smart Schools, Brad Moline, the CEO of ALLO, alongside Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and members of the LPS administration, marked the occasion with an event at Lincoln High School. Moline emphasized that education is critical to community health and that every student deserves the digital tools necessary for success. He noted that this program is part of a broader vision to ensure that students do not have to seek out secure connections in public spaces to complete their homework.

The Calix Service Cloud provides essential support for service provisioning and troubleshooting, ensuring that community Wi-Fi networks can be effectively maintained.
