Voltrac Secures €7 Million to Revolutionize Agriculture with Thor

Voltrac, a Spanish robotics startup, has raised €7 million to enhance agricultural operations with its innovative unmanned ground vehicle, Thor.

Addressing Labour Shortages in Agriculture

The agricultural industry is currently grappling with significant labour shortages, which are adversely affecting both food production and logistical processes. In response to this pressing issue, Voltrac, a pioneering robotics startup headquartered in Valencia, Spain, has unveiled its latest innovation, Thor—an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed specifically for autonomous applications in agriculture and logistics. Recently, Voltrac announced that it has successfully secured €7 million in seed funding, led by Extantia and supported by investors like FoodLabs, Antler, PUSH, and Prototype Capital. This financial backing will enable the company to scale up its production to 100 units annually, starting in 2026.

Innovative Solutions for Farming Families

Founded in 2024 by Thomas Hubregtsen and Francisco Infante Aguirre, Voltrac is committed to addressing the labour shortages that threaten the livelihoods of farming families. Aguirre shared a personal anecdote about his family’s history in farming, highlighting the struggles faced when there were insufficient workers to tend to the fields, forcing them to relinquish their land. Their mission with Thor is to prevent similar circumstances for other agricultural families, allowing them to sustain their operations without sacrificing their heritage.

Thor stands out in the market due to its unique design, which is distinct from competitors like John Deere and the Honghu T70. The vehicle is constructed with 70% fewer components, incorporates a distributed electric propulsion system featuring individual wheel motors, and boasts triple the battery capacity compared to other models. The batteries are easily swappable, which significantly minimizes downtime and reduces maintenance costs by nearly 30% each year.

Advanced Technology and Future Prospects

The capabilities of Thor extend beyond mere automation. It supports tele-operation and autonomous functionality, allowing a single operator to manage multiple units at once. Additionally, Thor is compatible with various existing farm implements, such as ploughs and seed drills, which automates their operation and helps farmers reduce capital expenditure. As described by Yair Reem, a partner at Extantia, Voltrac has successfully navigated challenges that many hardware startups face regarding costs, achieving price parity with traditional diesel platforms without imposing a premium on farmers or logistics operators.

In the near future, Voltrac plans to increase production at its Valencia facility to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving agricultural sector. Beyond its agricultural applications, the design of Thor is being modified to cater to frontline logistics, enabling it to autonomously transport loads of up to four tonnes across challenging terrains. The company’s future roadmap also includes enhancing Thor‘s autonomy levels and developing reinforcement learning algorithms, aimed at optimizing crop treatments in real time, which is expected to lead to higher yields, improved efficiency, and greater sustainability in agricultural practices.
