The Surge in Global Running Participation
In a remarkable surge of interest in running, the upcoming 2026 London Marathon is set to feature over 1.1 million registrants. This impressive participation highlights a global trend towards increased engagement in running as a sport. However, despite this enthusiasm, many runners still face significant barriers to accessing professional coaching services. Typically, aspiring athletes are forced to choose between generic fitness applications, which average around €20 per month, or the more costly option of hiring human coaches, which can reach approximately €100 per month. Addressing this challenge, the French startup Kotcha has emerged with an innovative solution designed to make elite coaching accessible to all.
Kotcha’s AI-Powered Coaching Revolution
Kotcha aims to bridge the coaching divide by leveraging advanced artificial intelligence technology to deliver personalized training experiences. The app offers a suite of features including adaptive training plans, tailored feedback, and real-time support, which recreate the essential aspects of a traditional coaching relationship. Recently, Kotcha secured €3.5 million in funding, led by Racine2, an investment entity managed by Serena and makesense. This funding round also saw contributions from True Global, Motier Ventures, and various investors focused on the sports, health, and consumer sectors. The newly acquired capital will facilitate Kotcha’s expansion throughout Europe and beyond, enabling the hiring of more engineers and sports scientists to further enhance its AI coaching capabilities.
A Vision for Team-Based Support in Running
Co-founded by marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge, along with Ben Dupont (CEO), Michel-André Chirita (CTO), Dimitri Dor (CMO), and the NN Running Team, Kotcha combines elite athletic expertise with entrepreneurial experience. The guiding philosophy of Kipchoge, who asserts that “running is a team sport,” profoundly influences the company’s mission to democratize coaching and foster a supportive environment for runners worldwide. Dupont explained that the core of Kotcha’s offering is a generative AI model developed from extensive discussions and collaborative sessions with Kipchoge’s team, which manifests within the app as four distinct AI characters. These characters include a head coach, a physical trainer, a nutritionist, and a data analyst, each trained to provide users with comprehensive support.
Innovative Features and Future Plans
Unlike conventional fitness applications such as Runna, Strava, Humango, and Ochy, which typically offer fixed training regimens, Kotcha provides daily updates to training schedules and can adapt in real-time to changes in a user’s routine. The app also features 24/7 support for inquiries related to training, nutrition, and recovery, offering a truly multi-dimensional coaching experience that aims to replicate the support system found among professional athletes. Currently, Kotcha is available in both French and English on the App Store, catering to runners preparing for events ranging from 10K races to full marathons. The app includes a one-week free trial and is priced at €14.99 per month.
Looking ahead, Kotcha plans to introduce real-time adaptive coaching capabilities that will allow for immediate adjustments to training sessions based on individual circumstances. The company’s long-term vision includes expanding its reach outside of Europe while continuously refining its AI technology and team. Ultimately, Kotcha aspires to make high-level coaching available to runners globally, promoting enhanced well-being through the transformative power of running.
