Equilar Report: HR Executive Compensation Jumps 18% in 2025

The Equilar 2025 report reveals a significant increase in HR executive pay, reflecting the growing importance of strategic HR leadership in major firms.

Equilar’s Insights on HR Executive Pay Trends

A recent report from Equilar, a notable provider of executive data solutions, has revealed a substantial rise in the compensation of Human Resources (HR) executives for the year 2025. The report, titled “HR Executive Pay Trends,” highlights that the median total compensation for top HR executives within the Equilar 500 has surged by 18%, climbing from $2.3 million in 2024 to $2.8 million this year. This increase underscores the evolving role of HR leaders in navigating the complexities of modern business environments, where they are increasingly recognized for their strategic contributions.

The report includes valuable commentary from the HR Policy Association, which emphasizes that HR executives are now pivotal at the crossroads of workforce management, organizational strategy, and technological advancement. According to Ani Huang, the President and CEO of the association’s Center on Executive Compensation, the current landscape necessitates HR leaders who possess a comprehensive understanding of their organization’s strategic aims, particularly regarding the integration of artificial intelligence and its implications for workforce dynamics and corporate culture.

Compensation Breakdown by Industry and Company Size

The analysis further delves into the compensation figures across various sectors, revealing that companies with annual revenues exceeding $25 billion offered the highest median pay for HR executives, reaching approximately $3.6 million. Conversely, smaller firms reported a median compensation of about $2.2 million. Notably, performance-based incentives constituted a significant portion of overall compensation, making up nearly one-third of the average pay structure. In contrast, stock options represented a smaller fraction, accounting for less than 10% of total compensation across the board.

The report also highlights industry-specific trends, with the communications services sector leading in pay packages, averaging $5.5 million. Following closely were the technology and healthcare industries, which also reported competitive compensation rates.

Gender Disparities in HR Executive Roles

An insightful aspect of the report is its examination of gender representation in top HR roles. Since 2021, the number of men in these positions has doubled, rising from 13 to 26, while the number of women has seen a modest increase of 19.5%, from 41 to 49. Despite the increase in female representation, a notable pay gap persists; men’s median compensation has reached $3.8 million, significantly higher than the $2.9 million median for women, a discrepancy largely attributed to higher performance-based awards granted to men.
