Porsche is integrating wireless charging technology into its upcoming all-electric Cayenne. The optional feature aims to enhance the user experience by simplifying the home charging process.
The new system uses an 11 kW charging floor plate installed in the home. All components, except the power cable, are housed within the plate itself, eliminating the need for separate wall boxes or control units.
To begin charging, drivers simply park the Cayenne above the plate. The vehicle automatically lowers its ride height to optimize energy transfer, which occurs contactlessly over a distance of roughly four to six inches. Safety features such as motion detection and foreign object detection automatically halt charging if interference is detected.
Porsche‘s wireless charging system integrates with the My Porsche app for monitoring and management of charging sessions. The car’s Surround View parking system also assists in positioning the vehicle for optimal charging. Once properly positioned and the parking brake engaged, charging begins automatically. The system also retains convenient features such as departure timers and cabin preconditioning.
Michael Steiner, Porsche‘s Board Member for Development, emphasized the importance of ease of use and readily available infrastructure for wider adoption of electric vehicles. He expressed pride in bringing this innovative charging solution to series production.
Initially, Porsche Wireless Charging will launch in Europe in 2026, with a global rollout planned subsequently. The technology is showcased in a prototype Cayenne at the IAA Mobility show in Munich. This prototype features a striking fluorescent paint design that illuminates when charging.
The paint itself is an innovative aspect, comprised of over 25 thin layers, including conductive primers, electrodes, insulating layers, and electroluminescent material with color pigments. The design, created by Style Porsche, dynamically changes as electricity flows, creating a visually appealing pattern with several color tones.
The all-electric Cayenne, set for its world premiere at the end of 2025, marks a significant step for Porsche in enhancing the electric vehicle ownership experience. The company’s commitment to improving convenience and accessibility within the electric mobility sector is clearly evident.
