SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) unveiled a broadened approach to digital sovereignty and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation within Europe. The company’s expanded SAP Sovereign Cloud portfolio provides European clients with a comprehensive technology stack, including SAP Cloud Infrastructure and SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site.
This expansion aims to establish a new standard for secure, compliant, and scalable innovation, reinforcing digital sovereignty as a key aspect of Europe’s technological resilience. A member of SAP SE‘s Executive Board, Thomas Saueressig, emphasized the importance of leveraging AI to address specific industry challenges, particularly within the public sector and regulated environments. He highlighted the role of SAP‘s expanded cloud offering in providing access to the full range of cloud innovations and AI capabilities while maintaining a sovereign framework.
The enhanced SAP Sovereign Cloud offers customers several deployment models. These models allow organizations to tailor their infrastructure, platform, and software choices to meet their regulatory and operational needs. This flexibility promotes secure innovation and compliance with local laws, while also enabling scalability.
SAP Cloud Infrastructure, an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform, is built and operated using open-source technologies within SAP‘s data center network within the EU. This ensures compliance with European data protection regulations. Another option, SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site, provides SAP-operated infrastructure within a client-owned or client-selected data center, offering the highest level of data sovereignty. In Germany, SAP offers Delos Cloud, a secure and sovereign cloud tailored to the public sector’s needs.
SAP‘s investment in this initiative exceeds €20 billion. This substantial commitment reflects the company’s strategic focus on digital sovereignty and its support for Europe’s digital autonomy. The SAP Sovereign Cloud offering not only provides infrastructure control but also unlocks the full potential of SAP‘s cloud solutions. This enables organizations to operate their SAP Business Suite in sovereign environments while benefiting from continuous innovation through SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) and embedded SAP Business AI capabilities.
Martin Merz, President of SAP Sovereign Cloud, stated that the offering delivers a secure, scalable, and future-ready solution, allowing clients flexibility in deployment model selection while ensuring compliance. SAP Sovereign Cloud is currently available in several European countries, with further expansion planned. The service is supported by hundreds of localized experts and a wide array of certifications, ensuring full-stack sovereignty across various dimensions. This empowers clients to maintain control, meet regulatory demands, and innovate confidently.
