Nestlé has appointed a new chief executive officer, Philipp Navratil, following the dismissal of Laurent Freixe. Freixe‘s less than one-year tenure ended after an internal investigation revealed an undisclosed romantic relationship with a direct report. This breach of Nestlé‘s code of conduct prompted the board’s decision.
Nestlé‘s Chairman, Paul Bulcke, confirmed the termination, emphasizing the company’s commitment to its values and governance. He expressed gratitude for Freixe‘s past contributions to the company.
Navratil, a long-time Nestlé employee, brings extensive experience to the role. He joined the company in 2001 and recently led the Nespresso brand. His background also includes overseeing global strategy for Nescafé and the Starbucks licensing agreement.
Bulcke expressed confidence in Navratil‘s ability to lead Nestlé‘s growth initiatives and improve efficiency. He assured stakeholders that the company’s strategic direction would remain unchanged.
Nestlé has faced challenges in recent years, experiencing slower-than-expected growth. The company’s stock price dropped following the announcement of Freixe‘s dismissal. Nestlé shares traded on the Swiss Exchange (CH:NESN) saw a decline. The stock has underperformed this year and over the past twelve months.
The change in leadership comes as Nestlé prepares to compete with a newly formed coffee giant. The merger of Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. (KDP) and JDE Peet’s NV (NL:JDEP), creating a major global coffee player, will intensify competition in the coffee market. This new entity will be roughly the same size as Nestlé‘s coffee operations.
